Info

Mae Sot

Mae Sot is a town in western Thailand and is the main land gateway between Thailand and Burma. It is a notable trade hub and has a substantial population of Burmese refugees and economic migrants. As a result it has also gained notoriety for its trade in gems and teak, as well as black market services such as people trafficking and drugs. Each day hundreds of Burmese cross the Moi River into Thailand to trade, search for work, or escape both an oppressive Military regime and poverty. Either officially across the Friendship Bridge (linking Mae Sot with Myawaddy in Myanmar) or unofficially by crossing the Moi river using whatever means are possible to them.
